Diana Rosen's High Stakes and Expectations stuns me every time I open it up again. The subjects are varied and wide — a stroll in Père-Lachaise, a reference to Final Jeopardy! or the thoroughly delightful "Nectarines! It's a Heckuva Fruit!" But no matter the subject touched upon, what runs like a current beneath all the poems, are stories of deep humanity — final moments, sudden awakenings, long endurance, sudden sharp shifts of course.
